The heart and brain are arguably two of the most vital organs in the human body. Without either organ, one cannot survive. Historically and symbolically, the heart has represented how we feel or our emotions. In fact, such statements as “I wear my heart on my sleeve” demonstrate the heart representing emotion. The brain, of course, represents our thoughts or the process of thinking and memory. Both of these complex systems, of emotions and thinking are critical to our day to day experiences. Nonetheless, some of us are more inclined towards the emotions, and have a great ability to “feel”, and others are more inclined to thinking, and have a great ability to use rationale, consider, and reflect. Yet, in a rudimentary sense, the emotions can inform the thoughts and the thoughts can inform the emotions. Without a healthy balance of either or harmony between the two, we can become either rigid because we “know” and are unable to be flexible towards new ideas or the possibility of difference, or we can become chaotic meaning we lack self control. When we operate at optimum levels of mental health the two components of one’s self, emotions and thoughts, are well integrated, allowing a person to experience a more flexible and peaceful state of being. This is the goal of Repaired Connections Counseling Center, to allow each person to develop a more integrated and healthy state of being, thereby, interrupting, challenging, and repairing broken connections.
